More than 100 Rohingya asylum seekers escaping violence in Myanmar reach Aceh, Indonesia

PEREULAK, Indonesia — On Wednesday, a fragile wooden vessel carrying over 100 Rohingya Muslims reached the shores of Indonesia, continuing a trend in the Aceh province where refugees escape the ongoing violence and turmoil in Myanmar.

The Indonesian government has attributed the rising influx of Rohingya Muslims to an alarming increase in human trafficking activities in the region. Local police chief Nova Suryandaru shared that the boat’s engine had malfunctioned, resulting in the vessel, mainly occupied by women and children, running ashore near Pereulak village in East Aceh district. Authorities are in the process of gathering information regarding the identities of the passengers.

Suryandaru stated that one of the refugees informed officials that the boat had departed from Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh, aiming to reach Malaysia. However, there are suspicions that traffickers intentionally compromised the boat’s engine to prevent the arrivals from being sent back to sea. The local authorities proclaimed that decisive action would be taken against those responsible for human trafficking activities, as highlighted by Suryandaru.

In the last year alone, over 600 Rohingya refugees have reached East Aceh. This includes more than 260 individuals, mostly women and children, who arrived earlier this month in two separate boats, described as weak and hungry. Indonesia has also sought support from the global community to address this growing humanitarian crisis.

Currently, around one million Rohingya people, primarily of the Muslim faith, are living in refugee camps in Bangladesh after fleeing their home country. Among them, about 740,000 fled a severe military crackdown in 2017, during which the Myanmar security forces were accused of widespread atrocities, including mass killings and rapes. The Rohingya community suffers from significant discrimination in Myanmar, where most members are denied citizenship rights.
