PROVO, Utah — Kanon Catchings delivered an impressive performance for BYU, scoring 23 points as the Cougars edged Baylor 93-89 in a thrilling contest that extended into overtime on Tuesday night.
During the extra period, BYU surged ahead with a 9-3 run, establishing an 87-81 advantage. Though Robert Wright of Baylor made a pair of free throws and VJ Edgecombe connected on a 3-pointer to narrow the gap to a single point at 87-86, the Cougars responded by hitting all six of their free-throw attempts to secure the win. Richie Saunders, who scored six of his 17 points during this decisive stretch, also made both of his shots from the field.
Catchings had a flawless shooting night, going 8 for 8 from the field, including four 3-pointers, along with converting all three of his free throws. Egor Demin chipped in with 15 points, while Trevin Knell added 11 for BYU, who now holds a record of 14-6 and is 5-4 in the Big 12.
For Baylor, Edgecombe was the standout player with 28 points, while Wright contributed 22. Together, they accounted for 11 of the Bears’ 18 assists throughout the game.
Baylor, with a record of 13-7 and also at 5-4 in conference play, struggled initially and found themselves behind since the 16:36 mark in the first half, facing a deficit as large as 11 points in the second half. Wright led a comeback effort, scoring all nine points during a 9-3 run to cut the Cougars’ lead to 78-76 with just 49 seconds left. After a missed 3-pointer from Demin, Wright managed to tie the game at 78 with a pair of free throws just five seconds before the overtime buzzer sounded.
With this victory, BYU extends its lead in the series against Baylor to 7-6, having won every matchup hosted at home.
In the upcoming Saturday games, Baylor will face No. 11 Kansas while BYU will travel to compete against UCF.
