Kyle Connor nets two goals as Jets defeat Canadiens 4-1

MONTREAL — In a decisive matchup, the Winnipeg Jets emerged victorious over the Montreal Canadiens with a score of 4-1, marking their fourth consecutive win. Kyle Connor was a standout with two goals in the game, while Connor Hellebuyck contributed with 24 saves to secure the triumph for the Jets.

Other key contributors included Mark Scheifele, who also found the back of the net, and Rasmus Kupari, who sealed the game with an empty-net goal. Gabriel Vilardi played a significant role by providing two assists throughout the night.

The Canadiens initially grabbed an advantage with Juraj Slafkovsky scoring early in the first period, thanks to a setup from Nick Suzuki. Sam Montembeault, who stopped 20 shots, battled hard but couldn’t turn the tide as Montreal faced their third straight loss after a strong run of ten wins in their previous thirteen games.

Slafkovsky’s goal came at 11:03 in the first, giving Montreal an early lead. However, at 15:36, Connor retaliated to level the score. Scheifele then pushed the Jets ahead with a goal in the second period, followed by Connor’s second goal just two seconds before the period concluded, putting Winnipeg in a comfortable position moving into the final frame.

Highlights from the game included Connor and Scheifele reaching 29 goals this season, tying them for second-best in the entire league. For Hellebuyck, it marked his 31st win, reinforcing his status as a frontrunner for the Vezina Trophy this year.

On the Canadiens’ side, although they started strong, they allowed the Jets to regain momentum as the game progressed. Further complicating things, defenseman Kaiden Guhle sustained a leg injury from a fall into the boards during the last period and did not return to the match.

A pivotal moment in the contest was Connor’s second goal, which was a significant blow to Montreal’s efforts, extending the Jets’ lead to 3-1.

Despite the loss, the Canadiens successfully managed to keep Winnipeg’s power play—which is the most effective in the league—scoreless throughout the night. The Jets struggled to convert their outlets, finishing the game 0 for 3 on power plays.

Looking ahead, the Jets will continue their three-game road trip with a challenge against the Boston Bruins on Thursday night. The Canadiens will also be in action on the same day, set to host the Minnesota Wild as they conclude a three-game homestand.
