San Antonio’s Victor Wembanyama is making his return to the All-Star weekend festivities.
Wembanyama, who has quickly risen to prominence in the NBA, has been selected once again for the Rising Stars event, marking his second consecutive appearance. This exciting competition is scheduled for February 14 in San Francisco, coinciding with the opening night of the three-day All-Star lineup.
The Rising Stars event will take the form of a one-night tournament, showcasing four teams, each consisting of seven players. The format includes semifinal games where the first team to reach 40 points will claim victory. The winners of these semifinal matchups will then face off in a championship game, where the first team to score 25 points will be crowned the champion.
Wembanyama is among a select group of 11 second-year players chosen to participate in this event. In addition to his Rising Stars role, he is considered a strong contender for selection as a reserve in the All-Star Game, scheduled for February 16. The nomination list for these 14 players will be unveiled on Thursday. Last week, the league announced the 10 starters for the All-Star Game, although more players will be included as starters for the event.
Other notable second-year players who have been selected include Bilal Coulibaly from Washington, Gradey Dick from Toronto, Keyonte George from Utah, Scoot Henderson from Portland, Trayce Jackson-Davis from Golden State, Jaime Jaquez Jr. from Miami, Dereck Lively II from Dallas, Brandon Miller from Charlotte, Amen Thompson from Houston, and Cason Wallace from Oklahoma City.
The roster of rookies participating in the Rising Stars includes Washington teammates Alex Sarr and Bub Carrington, Stephon Castle from San Antonio, Tristan da Silva from Orlando, and Memphis players Zach Edey and Jaylen Wells. Dalton Knecht from the Los Angeles Lakers, Jared McCain of the Philadelphia 76ers, Yves Missi from New Orleans, and Zaccharie Risacher from Atlanta—who was the first overall pick in last year’s draft—round out the rookie selections. Notably, McCain is dealing with an injury and will likely be substituted out by the NBA.
A fourth team in the Rising Stars tournament will be made up of players from the G League. This team will feature Mac McClung, the two-time reigning slam dunk contest champion from the Osceola Magic, along with JD Davison from the Maine Celtics, Bryce McGowens of the Rip City Remix, Leonard Miller from the Iowa Wolves, Dink Pate of the Mexico City Capitanes, Reed Sheppard from the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, and Pat Spencer from the Santa Cruz Warriors.
The victorious team in the Rising Stars tournament will have the distinction of being the additional team in the All-Star Game, joining three teams made up of NBA players.
