BARCELONA, Spain – Hansi Flick has announced that he will retain Wojciech Szczesny as the starting goalkeeper for Barcelona’s final group stage match in the Champions League, which is set to take place on Wednesday.
Iñaki Peña had been filling the goalkeeper position since Marc-André ter Stegen suffered a significant knee injury last year. However, Szczesny, who was brought into the team following Ter Stegen’s injury, took to the field last week, playing a pivotal role in their impressive comeback victory over Benfica in the Champions League, as well as during their decisive win against Valencia in La Liga over the weekend.
“My role involves making important decisions,” Flick stated on Tuesday, addressing the media before their home match against Atalanta. “Both goalkeepers are excellent, but for this match, we have decided to go with Szczesny. Iñaki has performed admirably, however, we trust Szczesny for this game. I always aim to make choices that benefit the team, and that is what I have done here.”
This season, Szczesny has only made a handful of appearances, participating in three other matches — one in the Copa del Rey and two in the Spanish Super Cup, where Barcelona emerged victorious during their campaign in Saudi Arabia.
Currently, Barcelona holds the second position in the standings among the 36 teams in the league and has already secured its place in the upcoming round of 16 in the Champions League.
