Google has announced that it will await guidance from the U.S. government regarding any potential alterations to the names of the Gulf of Mexico and Denali on its maps.

In a statement released on Monday, the tech giant clarified that it would only implement changes once the government revises its official naming conventions for these geographical features.

The naming discussions gained momentum after President Donald Trump took office, during which he initiated a move to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America, as well as reverting the name of the country’s tallest mountain back to Mt. McKinley.

In a post on X, Google outlined its long-standing protocol of implementing name updates in line with official government resources.

The company emphasized that Google Maps will be updated promptly to reflect any modifications made to the Geographic Names Information System, a comprehensive database that catalogues over a million geographical features across the United States.

“We will update Google Maps in the U.S. swiftly if changes are made to record Mount McKinley and Gulf of America,” Google noted.

The name “Denali” is favored by the Indigenous peoples of Alaska and was restored to the mountain’s nomenclature by former President Barack Obama in 2015. The mountain was previously known as “McKinley,” a name given in honor of President William McKinley by a gold prospector in the late 1800s.

In contrast, the Associated Press has decided to maintain the name Gulf of Mexico, a title that has been in use for 400 years, while also recognizing the alternative name Gulf of America.

However, when it comes to the mountain, the AP plans to continue using Mount McKinley instead of Denali, as the area is entirely within U.S. territory and President Trump retains the power to modify federal geographic names within the nation.
