The Houston Texans have made significant changes to their coaching staff by terminating offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik and offensive line coach Chris Strausser, according to sources familiar with the situation who spoke anonymously since the firings have not yet been officially confirmed.
These dismissals follow a disappointing decline in the performance of the Texans’ offense, which had previously shown promise during the 2023 season. Slowik took charge of the offensive play-calling last year, leading the team through a successful campaign where rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud achieved impressive statistics. Under his leadership, the Texans’ offense ranked 12th in both scoring, averaging 22.2 points per game, and total yardage, accumulating 342.4 yards per game. Stroud’s standout performance earned him the title of AP Offensive Rookie of the Year and helped the team secure their first playoff appearance in four seasons.
During their playoff run, the Texans triumphed over the Cleveland Browns in the wild-card round, making Stroud the youngest quarterback to ever win a playoff game at the age of 22. However, this current season saw a decline in the Texans’ offensive capabilities, with the team ranking 19th in scoring (21.9 points per game) and 22nd in yardage (319.7 yards per game). Stroud faced increased challenges, being sacked 52 times—the second-highest in the league—while his performance metrics suffered and his interception count increased from five to twelve.
Despite these setbacks, the Texans managed to finish the season at 10-7 for the second consecutive year and again advanced past the wild-card round, defeating the Los Angeles Chargers. Their postseason journey came to an end at the hands of the two-time defending champions, the Kansas City Chiefs, during the divisional round on Saturday.
The Texans were expected to make a strong offensive showing with key players like running back Joe Mixon and wide receiver Stefon Diggs, but injuries limited their effectiveness. The absence of these pivotal players, along with other injuries across the roster, hindered the team’s ability to establish a consistent offensive flow throughout the season.
