SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Xavier Watts, a standout safety who has earned All-America honors twice, has declared for the NFL Draft, opting not to return to Notre Dame for another season.
Watts shared his decision via social media on Friday, shortly after the Irish fell to Ohio State in the College Football Playoff championship game held in Atlanta.

Starting his college football journey as a wide receiver in 2020, Watts transitioned to the defensive side of the ball during his second year. Over the last two seasons, he has distinguished himself as a leading playmaker, tallying 13 interceptions—the highest in the Football Bowl Subdivision. This past season alone saw him secure six interceptions, including a notable 100-yard return that was instrumental in Notre Dame’s victory against Southern California. His on-field performance earned him a spot on the Associated Press All-America first team for two consecutive years.

Hailing from Omaha, Nebraska, Watts had the option to return to Notre Dame, eligible for an extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA due to the disruptions caused by the pandemic during the 2020 season. Many draft analysts predict that he will be chosen either late in the first round or in the second round of the upcoming NFL Draft.

“As I begin this next chapter in my football career, I feel immense pride reflecting on the unforgettable moments and the people I will always cherish,” Watts stated on X. He expressed gratitude for his time at Notre Dame, hoping that his contributions have helped uphold the legacy established by past players.
