STEVENSVILLE, Md. — A cannabis extraction facility in Stevensville, located on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, experienced an explosion and fire on Wednesday, which resulted in injuries to two employees, according to local fire authorities.
Firefighters responded quickly to an alert regarding the explosion at PharmaCann, as stated by the Office of the State Fire Marshal. The fire suppression systems within the facility, including sprinklers, effectively limited the damage sustained, and while one worker was seriously injured, their condition is not considered life-threatening.
An investigation is currently underway to determine the cause of the explosion, which reportedly occurred in an extraction area that involved the use of propane and butane.
In light of the incident, four nearby structures were evacuated and temporarily shut down to address the damage caused to the facility and its fire suppression system. Officials noted that the emergency response systems, such as alarms and ventilation, functioned as intended, significantly reducing potential harm and property damage.
While a precise estimate of the financial impact is still pending, initial evaluations suggest that damages may exceed $250,000.
