LOS ANGELES — Sean McVay, head coach of the Los Angeles Rams, expressed a desire for clarity regarding Matthew Stafford’s future with the team as they approach the next NFL season. During his end-of-season press conference, McVay stated that he would appreciate knowing “sooner than later” about Stafford’s intentions, although he provided no specific updates on the veteran quarterback’s plans. McVay has indicated a strong interest in having Stafford return for a 17th season. The franchise has made significant efforts to accommodate changes Stafford requested in his contract, completing adjustments just before training camp began.
McVay stressed the importance of clear communication between the team and Stafford. He mentioned that prolonged uncertainty does not benefit anyone involved, and he aims for a prompt resolution regarding Stafford’s status. “I think there’s a lot of love coming from our part. I think there’s a lot of appreciation coming from his part as well,” McVay said, emphasizing that a sooner-than-later solution would be preferable.
The Rams head coach highlighted Stafford’s contributions to the team’s success, including leading them to the NFC West title and a playoff victory over Minnesota. Although Los Angeles ultimately lost to the Philadelphia Eagles, they had previously achieved remarkable success together, culminating in a Super Bowl win in February 2022. Over his four seasons with the Rams, Stafford has played in three playoff runs and seven postseason games.
Despite the positive remarks, McVay refrained from definitively stating that Stafford would indeed be playing for the Rams if he chooses to continue his career. “We’ll talk about all those things at the appropriate time,” McVay responded when asked for clarification on Stafford’s future. He praised Stafford’s performance and emphasized the quarterback’s significant impact on the team.
Throughout the season, Stafford managed to deal with various injuries, maintaining a relatively low number of sacks. Following the loss to the Eagles, Stafford mentioned he would “take some time” to consider his plans moving forward but expressed confidence in his ability to continue playing. Recently, Stafford’s wife, Kelly, shared that he had broken four ribs during a game against San Francisco in December, describing the injury as quite painful.
McVay confirmed that imaging conducted on Stafford’s ribs last month did not reveal any serious complications, and the quarterback was able to practice and compete effectively despite the injury. He praised Stafford’s resilience, stating, “He’s as tough as it gets.”
The organization faces uncertainty regarding plans for the quarterback position should Stafford decide to depart. Veteran Jimmy Garoppolo, who served as Stafford’s backup, will be a free agent after completing his one-year contract. Meanwhile, third-string quarterback Stetson Bennett has yet to gain any experience in an NFL regular-season game.
“The quarterback is always the first thing in mind as it relates to how you move forward with the team,” McVay remarked, noting how well Stafford has performed. He looks forward to discussing the team’s future strategy upon their return to the offseason.
Additionally, McVay offered no insights into the future of wide receiver Cooper Kupp, who is on track to consume nearly $30 million in cap space by 2025. The Rams are likely weighing their options regarding their Super Bowl 56 MVP, although they have not publicly addressed potential changes.
“I think we should let the emotions of the season settle,” McVay advised, highlighting the importance of reviewing decisions with ownership and the coaching staff. He reiterated the need to evaluate the best path forward for the Rams as they look ahead to the upcoming years.
