Popovich sits out Spurs-Pacers matchup in Paris as he recuperates at home.

PARIS — Rick Carlisle, the head coach of the Indiana Pacers, has faced off against Gregg Popovich of the San Antonio Spurs more than any other coach in the NBA, tallying a total of 87 encounters, including playoff contests.
On Thursday, their anticipated 88th duel will not take place due to Popovich’s absence, which has raised questions about when he might return to the Spurs’ bench. Currently, he is in recovery mode following a stroke he suffered in November. His lack of presence is particularly evident during this week’s NBA games in Paris between the Pacers and the Spurs.
The Spurs organization reports that Popovich is showing signs of improvement, a sentiment echoed by numerous coaches across the league. However, details are scarce, as those close to him wish to respect his privacy.
“He’s a real institution and has been a constant figure,” Carlisle noted. “It feels odd not seeing him around. I have had some conversations with him, and he is making steady progress. The hope is that he returns soon.”
For Popovich, missing this Paris trip, a city he holds dear, is likely disheartening. The journey is rich with the elements he cherishes: cultural exchanges, exquisite cuisine, basketball, and an appreciation for fine wine. As the unofficial sommelier of the NBA, Popovich would have undoubtedly hosted remarkable dinners in the city.
Approaching his 76th birthday next week, Popovich stands as the all-time winningest coach in NBA history, leading the Spurs to five championships and a gold medal with USA Basketball at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. He experienced the stroke at the Spurs’ home arena on November 2, where he was promptly attended to by medical personnel present for that evening’s game.
Acting Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson has shared his deep respect and gratitude for what he has learned from Popovich. “He has profoundly influenced my life, allowing me to observe and learn from him, and we even challenge each other at times,” Johnson reflected. “I’m fortunate to have grown under his mentorship. We stay in regular contact, and he continues to be engaged in games, expressing his competitive spirit and sharing his insights.”
Johnson stepped in unexpectedly for the game against Minnesota on November 2, where the Spurs emerged victorious. Since Popovich’s health setback, the team has a record of 17 wins and 19 losses, experiencing some highs, such as a span where they won six out of eight games, but currently find themselves struggling with six losses in their previous seven matchups. It is important to note that all outcomes recorded during Popovich’s absence still contribute to his career record as he remains the official head coach. Chris Paul, who joined the Spurs last summer, largely due to his admiration for Popovich, shared that he has remained in close touch with him. He recalled a moment when he was on the phone with Popovich during contract negotiations in Las Vegas.
“I’m not sure if I should share this, but he often reaches out,” Paul stated. “After games, we discuss his observations, and I truly value that engagement, especially since he is not obligated to do so.”
However, it appears that Popovich feels a sense of duty to remain involved with the team, even from a distance. He is still the head coach in essence; he has just stepped back from the day-to-day operations and practices, and is not present in Paris this week.
Questions about whether he will return this season, next season, or in any capacity at all remain unanswered, and the Spurs organization is not forthcoming about his future. There is also uncertainty regarding any potential aftereffects from the stroke. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, strokes were the fourth leading cause of death in the U.S. as of 2023, impacting over half a million individuals annually.
“What I can share is that he is tackling his rehabilitation with the same determination he’s displayed throughout his coaching career,” shared R.C. Buford, Spurs CEO and a close ally of Popovich. “The dedication from our former players and the love they are showing him is remarkable. His recovery is ongoing, and we continue to see progress.”
Only time will provide answers to the many questions surrounding Popovich’s health and future.
