Aaron Glenn has made the decision to take on a head coaching role with the New York Jets, according to a source familiar with the matter. The announcement of his hiring is expected soon, although the team has not publicly confirmed it yet. Glenn’s move comes on the heels of Ben Johnson, who was the offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions, taking a head coaching position with the Chicago Bears. Additionally, Mike Vrabel has already made his transition to New England, leaving four head coaching positions still available: the Saints, Jaguars, Raiders, and Cowboys.
Johnson’s decision to join the Bears followed the Lions’ loss to Washington, which dashed their hopes after having secured the No. 1 seed. Meanwhile, Glenn, who previously worked with the Jets where he began his career in 1994 and made a name for himself as a Pro Bowl cornerback, is returning to the franchise.
Regarding the ongoing coaching searches, the Dallas Cowboys have been in discussions with various candidates. Following the departure of Mike McCarthy, owner Jerry Jones has communicated with Deion Sanders about the coaching position, although no formal talks have taken place yet. Jason Witten, an eleven-time Pro Bowl tight end for the Cowboys, is also said to be a potential candidate, yet he hasn’t had an interview either.
Among those interviewed by the Cowboys are Kellen Moore, the offensive coordinator for the Eagles and a former player for the team, as well as former Jets coach Robert Saleh and Leslie Frazier, a former Vikings coach. Brian Schottenheimer, who currently serves as the offensive coordinator for the Cowboys, was also part of the interview process.
This marks the ninth head coaching search for Jerry Jones since he took ownership of the Cowboys in 1989, a tenure that began with the firing of iconic coach Tom Landry. During his ownership, Jones has hired several notable coaches, including Jimmy Johnson, who led the team to two Super Bowl victories, and Barry Switzer, who won the franchise’s most recent Super Bowl almost three decades ago.
In the same vein, the Las Vegas Raiders are undergoing a shift in management after the dismissals of Antonio Pierce and general manager Tom Telesco, creating an opportunity for new minority owner Tom Brady to influence the team’s direction. The Raiders recently announced the hiring of John Spytek as their new general manager, previously an assistant GM in Tampa Bay during Brady’s time there.
As part of their coaching search, the Raiders have shown interest in interviewing a range of candidates, including Glenn and Johnson, as well as notable figures like Pete Carroll, Vance Joseph, Todd Monken, and Steve Spagnuolo.
The Jacksonville Jaguars also made headlines by letting go of general manager Trent Baalke after Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen opted out of a second interview. The Jaguars are expected to continue their search for a new head coach and have already met with several candidates, including Glenn, Johnson, and Spagnuolo, among others.
Additionally, the New Orleans Saints are considering multiple candidates as well, with Dolphins DC Anthony Weaver and Giants OC Mike Kafka receiving second interviews. Interim coach Darren Rizzi, who had a record of 3-5 after replacing Dennis Allen, is also in the running. The Saints are keen on potentially speaking with Kliff Kingsbury from the Commanders and are interested in McCarthy as well.
