ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Pete Medhurst, a well-known radio personality who dedicated many years to covering Navy athletics, has passed away at the age of 55.
The announcement of Medhurst’s death came from Navy’s athletic department, which communicated with his family. According to reports from the Capital Gazette in late October, he underwent surgery to address a brain tumor.
For the past 12 years, Medhurst served as the announcer for Navy football and was part of the Navy Radio Network since 1997, where he lent his voice to a variety of sports including basketball, lacrosse, baseball, volleyball, swimming, and wrestling. He was particularly notable for his 24-year tenure as the voice of Navy lacrosse.
In a tribute, the athletic department remarked, “RIP to a Navy legend. Not only was he a great broadcaster, but a friend, father, and husband. He touched the lives of so many midshipmen in his 28 years with Navy Athletics.”
A native of Anne Arundel County, Medhurst also provided play-by-play commentary for football on HDNet and CBS Sports Network, and for lacrosse on ESPNU and the Big Ten Network. Additionally, he made guest appearances covering games for the Washington Nationals.
The Nationals organization expressed their sorrow at his passing, stating, “Pete could always be counted on for a kind word and a smile. We will sorely miss seeing him around the ballpark and hearing his voice during Nationals broadcasts.”
