Surfer perishes after being rescued from icy waters off Long Island

A former police sergeant from New York City tragically lost his life in an apparent drowning incident while surfing in the icy waters of Long Island on Sunday.
Jack Shapiro, 54, was discovered unresponsive near Gilgo Beach around 2 p.m., as reported by local police.
A bystander managed to pull him from the water, administered CPR, and he was subsequently transported to a nearby medical facility, where he was pronounced deceased.
The cause of his death is still undergoing investigation by the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Shapiro was known among his friends as an avid surfer with a deep passion for the sport, as well as an enthusiast of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, according to reports from local sources.
He served in the New York Police Department for ten years before retiring as a sergeant in 2013.
