MANCHESTER, England — Manchester City has made another addition to their defense, signing 19-year-old Vitor Reis from Palmeiras for 35 million euros (approximately $36 million) on Tuesday. This acquisition follows the team’s earlier signing of 20-year-old Uzbekistan international Abdukodir Khusanov, who joined from Lens on a 4½-year deal. Details regarding Reis’ contract length have not been disclosed.

“I’m thrilled to become part of Manchester City,” Reis expressed. “I’m eager to contribute as we pursue more silverware.” As the team prepares for their Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain, manager Pep Guardiola shared his thoughts on the newcomers.

“They’re both very young talents. Khusanov is physically impressive, and I hope he can quickly pick up English,” Guardiola commented. “Vitor has significant promise, and I’m very pleased to have him on board.” Manchester City, the reigning Premier League champions, is in a busy January transfer window, currently sitting fifth in the league table, trailing 12 points behind leaders Liverpool, while also aiming to secure a place in the Champions League knockout stage.

Reports indicate that City is also interested in acquiring Eintracht Frankfurt forward Omar Marmoush for around 75 million euros (about $77 million). Reis, a former Brazil U17 international, comes with experience, having made 22 appearances for the first team at Palmeiras.

Txiki Begiristain, City’s director of football, praised Reis: “He excels with the ball and is remarkable in the air — he has all the qualities to evolve into one of the best players.” The recruitment of both Reis and Khusanov addresses recent injury concerns affecting City’s defense, including setbacks to Ruben Dias, John Stones, and Nathan Ake. Additionally, a significant ACL injury to Ballon d’Or winner Rodri has posed challenges for City’s ambitions in both domestic and European contests, leading Guardiola to acknowledge that his squad may be too limited in size.

Typically, Manchester City prefers to reserve significant transfers for the summer window, but this strategy appears to be shifting as they navigate ongoing challenges.

On Wednesday, City is set to face PSG in the Champions League, both teams at risk of potential elimination.
