RALEIGH, N.C. — A veteran Democratic representative from Wake County has announced his departure from the North Carolina General Assembly.
Rep. Joe John, who has served the northwestern region of Wake County, revealed his resignation through a letter on his Facebook page, citing a terminal diagnosis of throat cancer he recently received from his medical team. John, 85, publicly disclosed his throat cancer diagnosis for the first time in early December.

In his letter, he expressed his hope that his legacy would reflect a commitment to the common good, emphasizing his efforts to create connections, give a voice to the underserved, and advocate for justice.

John began his political career in the North Carolina House of Representatives in 2016 and has since completed four consecutive terms, with his fifth term set to begin. Prior to his tenure in the legislature, he dedicated many years to the judiciary, holding positions as a state appeals judge, superior court judge, and district judge. He also directed the North Carolina Crime Laboratory.

The local Wake County Democratic Party will be tasked with appointing a replacement for John’s position.

In his resignation letter, John mentioned that he intends to prioritize his health and cherish moments spent with his family.

“If my time in office has made even a small difference in your lives, then I will leave this world knowing I’ve done my part,” John reflected, emphasizing the impact he hoped to have made during his service.
