Oilers’ captain McDavid set for NHL hearing following match penalty for cross-checking

Edmonton Oilers’ captain Connor McDavid is set for a disciplinary hearing following a cross-check incident involving Vancouver Canucks forward Conor Garland, as confirmed by the NHL’s Department of Player Safety on Sunday.

Additionally, Canucks defenseman Tyler Myers will also face a hearing for his cross-check against Oilers defenseman Evan Bouchard. Both hearings are scheduled to take place on Monday afternoon.

The incidents took place during a fracas at the conclusion of the Canucks’ 3-2 win over the Oilers in Vancouver on Saturday night.

During the game, McDavid was assessed a match penalty for striking Garland’s head with his stick after both players became entangled as time expired, with Edmonton pressing for a tying goal.

Similarly, Myers received a match penalty for hitting Bouchard in the face with his stick as Bouchard was approaching him.

Meanwhile, all other players involved in the scuffle were penalized with minor roughing calls.

A match penalty is typically issued when officials believe a player has deliberately attempted to harm another player. Such a penalty results in an automatic suspension pending further review by the NHL commissioner.
