Oilers’ leader McDavid set for NHL hearing following match penalty for cross-checking

Edmonton Oilers’ captain Connor McDavid is set to face a disciplinary hearing due to a cross-check to the head of Vancouver Canucks winger Conor Garland, as confirmed by the NHL’s Department of Player Safety on Sunday.

Additionally, Canucks defenseman Tyler Myers will also be attending a hearing for his actions involving a cross-check directed at Edmonton’s Evan Bouchard. The specific scheduling for these hearings has not been finalized yet.

These incidents unfolded during a chaotic moment at the end of a game on Saturday night, where the Canucks claimed a 3-2 victory over the Oilers in Vancouver.

In the final moments of the match, McDavid received a match penalty after he struck his stick against Garland’s head while the two got caught up, with the Oilers desperately seeking an equalizer.

In a similar fashion, Myers was penalized with a match penalty after he struck Bouchard in the face with his stick as Bouchard approached him on the ice.

All other players involved in the altercation received minor penalties for roughing.

A match penalty is issued when officials determine that a player has intended to injure—or attempted to injure—another player. This type of penalty results in an automatic suspension until the NHL commissioner makes a ruling on the matter.
