MELBOURNE, Australia — Tommy Paul put an end to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina’s impressive streak of comebacks at the Australian Open with a commanding victory of 6-1, 6-1, 6-1, advancing to his third Grand Slam quarterfinal on Sunday.
The 12th-seeded American wrapped up the match in under 90 minutes against an opponent who struggled physically and had to call for a trainer’s assistance. Davidovich Fokina, currently ranked 66th in the world, had demonstrated remarkable resilience in his previous two matches by overcoming deficits where he lost the first two sets; however, this time, he could not replicate his earlier success.
Paul acknowledged Davidovich Fokina’s recent feats, stating, “What he did is unreal the past couple matches. … To do it twice in a row is amazing.” Despite this, Paul dominated the match, winning almost double the points compared to his competitor, finishing with 85 points against 43 for Davidovich Fokina.
Previously, Paul had achieved his best Grand Slam performance by reaching the semifinals at the Australian Open in 2023. He is now set on repeating that success, with his next challenge being a match against either the second seed, Alexander Zverev, a two-time major finalist, or the 14th seed, Ugo Humbert.
Paul was one of four American men to advance to the fourth round of the tournament in Melbourne. Fellow Americans, No. 21 Ben Shelton, qualifier Learner Tien, and Alex Michelsen, are looking to join him in the quarterfinals and will contest their fourth-round matches on Monday.
Originally from New Jersey, Paul grew up in North Carolina, where he honed his skills to become a prominent player on the professional scene.
