Daniil Medvedev penalized $76,000 for outburst during Australian Open

MELBOURNE, Australia — Daniil Medvedev has been handed a hefty fine totaling $76,000 due to his disruptive behavior involving a camera and his racket during the initial rounds of the Australian Open.

The announcement of these fines was made by the event organizers on Sunday, coming just two days after Medvedev’s surprising exit in the second round of the tournament.

In a tense first-round match against Kasidit Samrej, who is ranked 418th, Medvedev, the 2021 U.S. Open champion, reacted by smashing a small camera that was positioned near the net, incurring a $10,000 penalty for this incident.

During his second-round match against 19-year-old American qualifier Learner Tien, Medvedev displayed similar frustration, leading to a point penalty and an additional $66,000 in fines for various code violations.

The situation escalated when he was broken to fall behind 4-3 in the second set, following a lob from Tien that just landed on the baseline. In response, Medvedev threw his equipment towards the sidelines, causing it to skid across the court until it collided with an advertising panel nearby.

His outbursts included hitting a ball against the back wall, toppling a camera behind the baseline, and even punching his racket bag. Medvedev also expressed his frustration over receiving two consecutive foot-fault calls, which led to a double-fault during a critical tiebreak in the second set.

The match, which spanned nearly five hours, concluded shortly before 3 a.m. on Friday morning. Medvedev was seeded fifth at Melbourne Park, where he had been a finalist in three out of the past four years, including the previous year.

This tournament marked Medvedev’s season opener, coinciding with the recent birth of his second child, but the 28-year-old Russian was unable to showcase his top-level performance throughout the matches.
