CULLOWHEE, N.C. — In an impressive display, UNC Greensboro secured an 83-55 victory over Western Carolina on Saturday, propelled by Donovan Atwell’s 17 points.
Atwell demonstrated skillful shooting, making 6 of 13 attempts from the floor and sinking 5 of 9 three-pointers. Kenyon Giles also made significant contributions, going 6 for 11 overall, including a trio of three-point baskets to add 15 points to the scoreline. Ronald Polite rounded out the Spartans’ key performers, finishing with 11 points on 4 of 5 shooting and providing six assists.
For the Catamounts, Cord Stansberry led his team with 18 points, while Brandon Morgan chipped in with nine points, and CJ Hyland contributed eight points in the effort.
UNC Greensboro established control of the game, seizing the lead with 8:58 remaining in the first half and maintaining it throughout. Atwell’s strong performance saw him leading the scoring with 11 points in the first half, positioning his team ahead 30-26 at halftime. As the second half progressed, UNC Greensboro enhanced its lead to 50-35, spurred by an impressive 11-0 scoring streak. Giles was particularly effective, scoring 11 points in the closing period to help seal the game.
Looking ahead, both teams are set to play again on Wednesday, with UNC Greensboro welcoming Mercer, while Western Carolina travels to face East Tennessee State.
