FRISCO, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys recently conducted an interview with former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh, marking a significant move in their quest to find a replacement for Mike McCarthy. The meeting took place in person on Saturday, following a virtual interview a day earlier with Kellen Moore, the Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator who served as Dak Prescott’s play-caller during his tenure with the Cowboys from 2019 to 2022.
Saleh, who was dismissed from his role with the Jets just five games into his fourth season there, finished his time with the team holding a record of 20 wins against 36 losses. He is also pursuing a defensive coordinator position with the San Francisco 49ers, a role he previously held before joining the Jets in 2021.
The Cowboys are planning to interview Leslie Frazier, who currently serves as the assistant head coach in Seattle and has a substantial history in defensive roles. This includes serving as a defensive coordinator for both the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Buffalo Bills, as well as prior head coaching duties with the Minnesota Vikings before his release after the 2013 season.
The departure of McCarthy came after a five-year tenure with the Cowboys, and he recently interviewed for the head coaching position available with the Chicago Bears. Meanwhile, Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones has engaged in informal conversations with Deion Sanders, the head coach at Colorado and a former Hall of Famer cornerback who played for the Cowboys. Sanders was part of the team that secured their last Super Bowl victory at the end of the 1995 season. It’s worth noting that since that championship, Dallas has not progressed beyond the divisional round of the playoffs.
Another name being considered for the head coaching position is Jason Witten, a renowned tight end with the Cowboys and an 11-time Pro Bowl selection. Since hanging up his cleats in 2020, Witten has taken up coaching at a private high school located in the Dallas area.
Additionally, Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn is on the list of potential candidates. Glenn, a former defensive back from Texas A&M, had a brief stint with the Cowboys at the end of his impressive 15-year playing career. Both Glenn and Moore are currently focused on the upcoming divisional playoff games, with the Lions gearing up to host Washington and the Eagles set to face the Los Angeles Rams.
