MELBOURNE, Australia — Jannik Sinner, the reigning champion, secured a convincing victory over 46th-ranked American player Marcos Giron, winning the match with scores of 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 during the Australian Open on Saturday evening. With this win, Sinner advanced to the fourth round at Melbourne Park for the fourth consecutive time.
The 23-year-old Italian has now extended his winning streak to 17 matches, which carries over from the previous season. In what has been a remarkable 2024 for Sinner, he has not only claimed his first two Grand Slam titles but has also ascended to the No. 1 spot in the ATP rankings for the first time in his career. However, he is still navigating through a doping case that remains unresolved, as the World Anti-Doping Agency has appealed the decision that cleared him.
In the next round of the tournament, Sinner will face No. 13 seed Holger Rune, who triumphed over Miomir Kecmanovic in a five-set battle, with scores of 6-7 (5), 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
After his match against Giron, who was aiming to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career, Sinner reflected critically on his performance. He specifically pointed out his net play, noting that he only succeeded on 16 out of 24 points when approaching the net.
“The percentage of my net game was not really good,” Sinner commented with a light-hearted laugh. “For sure, if I want to go on in this tournament, I have to improve,” he added. “So hopefully in the next round, I’m able to raise my level.”
