Belgium’s national soccer team coach Domenico Tedesco has been dismissed after a short tenure marked by underwhelming results, according to an announcement from the Belgian soccer federation on Friday.
Tedesco took over the managerial role in February 2023, with the responsibility of rejuvenating the Red Devils following a disappointing exit from the World Cup during Roberto Martínez’s leadership. The federation’s decision to part ways with Tedesco was influenced by a series of unsatisfactory performances. Notably, the team experienced a setback in the 2024 European Championships, suffering a defeat to France in the Round of 16, and also faced challenges in the Nations League.
Adding to the complications during his tenure was Tedesco’s management of Thibaut Courtois, a world-class goalkeeper. The situation escalated when Courtois expressed displeasure after not being named the team’s captain, leading to his abrupt departure from the squad just before the Euro 2024 tournament.
Before his time with the Belgian national team, Tedesco had experience coaching various clubs, including Schalke, Spartak Moscow, and RB Leipzig. Following his dismissal, the Belgian federation has announced that it is in search of a new coach to take over the national team.
