DURHAM, N.C. — In an impressive performance during a highly anticipated matchup, freshman standout Toby Fournier led Duke with 23 points and 11 rebounds off the bench, guiding the No. 16 Blue Devils to a commanding 72-38 victory over the No. 18 California Golden Bears on Thursday night.
The contest took a decisive turn in the second quarter when Duke surged ahead with a 16-2 run, establishing a 22-point margin. This momentum continued in the third quarter with a 13-0 streak that extended their lead to 59-25.
Ashlon Jackson contributed significantly with 16 points for the Blue Devils (14-4, 5-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference), while Reigan Richardson added 14 points to the scoreboard. Fournier showcased his shooting efficiency, hitting 70% of his shots (7-of-10) and converting 9 of 10 from the free-throw line.
On the other side, Kayla Williams led the Golden Bears (16-3, 4-2) with eight points, but California struggled as they committed a season-high 31 turnovers, resulting in 32 points for Duke. The Blue Devils also outperformed the Bears on the board, dominating offensive rebounds 17-9 and restricting Cal to 17 points below their season average.
Duke maintained control throughout the game, starting strong with an 8-0 run in the first quarter that set the tone, leading 19-11. They put up the first points of the second quarter and after a basket from Cal, went on another 10-0 run that ended with two layups from Fournier, bringing the score to 35-13.
Though California closed out the first half with a six-point run to trail 37-20, they fell apart in the third. Cal managed only three successful shots out of 12 attempts while also tallying eight turnovers, leading to a dismal scoring performance in which they were outscored 24-7.
The Blue Devils are set to face Stanford on Sunday, while California will head to Wake Forest for their next matchup.
