PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Penguins appear to be parting ways with their two-time All-Star goaltender Tristan Jarry.
On Wednesday afternoon, the team announced that Jarry would be placed on waivers.
At 29 years old, Jarry has recorded an 8-7-4 record this season, coupled with a 3.32 goals against average and an .886 save percentage. The Penguins are gearing up for a challenging seven-game road trip later this week and are currently teetering on the edge of the playoff picture within the lackluster Eastern Conference.
This latest move comes just 18 months after the team secured Jarry with a five-year contract valued at an average annual worth of $5.375 million. Jarry made appearances in the All-Star game in both 2020 and 2022; however, he has faced significant challenges over the past couple of seasons.
Last spring, he lost his starting position to Alex Nedeljkovic. Although he managed to reclaim the top spot as the season began, Jarry encountered difficulties right from the start and was eventually sent to the American Hockey League for an extensive conditioning period.
One of the striking issues has been his performance in the early moments of games. This season alone, he has allowed goals on the opponent’s first shot six times, and he conceded a shorthanded goal to the Seattle Kraken on their second shot during a 4-2 defeat on Tuesday.
Given his current situation, it seems somewhat improbable that another team would opt to claim Jarry and take on his salary. This scenario might pave the way for his reassignment to the AHL.
