STANFORD, Calif. — Maxime Raynaud showcased his exceptional skills by registering his league-leading 13th double-double this season, scoring 24 points and securing 10 rebounds. His performance propelled Stanford to a decisive 88-65 victory over Virginia on Saturday.
The Cardinal, now with an 11-5 record overall and a 3-2 mark in conference play, completed a successful Atlantic Coast Conference homestand, having previously defeated Virginia Tech and now the Cavaliers.
The game began with Donavin Young and Oziyah Sellers each hitting 3-pointers for Stanford. However, Virginia responded fiercely with Ishan Sharma sinking two 3-pointers, complemented by two more from Isaac McKneely and Andrew Rohde, allowing them to take an early lead. A layup from Jacob Cofie midway through the first half pushed the Cavaliers ahead at 21-20. Yet, Sellers drained another 3-pointer, allowing Stanford to reclaim the lead. Raynaud then contributed with a tip-in, a powerful dunk, and a layup, helping Stanford pull ahead to a 29-22 advantage. A last-second 3-pointer from Jaylen Blakes extended the Cardinal’s lead to 40-30 at halftime.
The second half commenced with Sellers hitting a 3-pointer, and Stanford soon extended their lead to as much as 18 points, thanks to a mid-second-half 3 from Chisom Okpara. Virginia managed to narrow the gap to single digits following a free throw from Cofie with just five minutes left in the game. Nevertheless, Raynaud countered by scoring seven consecutive points, and Stanford ended the matchup with a strong 13-2 run.
In addition to Raynaud’s impressive performance, Sellers contributed 15 points, while Blakes added another 10 for Stanford, who excelled at the free-throw line, making 16 of 17 attempts and shooting 10 of 24 from three-point range.
On the other side, McNeely led Virginia with 22 points, hitting 5 of 11 from beyond the arc, while Cofie chipped in with 11 points. Looking ahead, Stanford is set to face Wake Forest, while Virginia will return home to host SMU on Wednesday.
