The Washington Nationals have finalized a one-year contract with former All-Star pitcher Jorge López, as announced by the team on Saturday.
This contract is valued at $3 million and includes performance incentives amounting to $500,000, divided into $250,000 for the number of games pitched and an additional $250,000 for games finished.
López, a 31-year-old right-handed pitcher hailing from Puerto Rico, had a performance in the previous season that featured a 2-3 record alongside a 2.89 ERA, achieving 50 strikeouts and four saves during 52 appearances in relief with the New York Mets and Chicago Cubs.
His impressive season includes 39 scoreless outings and a remarkable 16-inning streak without allowing any runs. However, his time with the Mets came to an end in May after a dramatic incident where he tossed his glove into the stands following an ejection, paired with a perplexing interview afterwards. Shortly after, he was picked up by the Cubs in June.
Over his nine seasons in Major League Baseball, López has made a name for himself, earning a spot as an American League All-Star in 2022. His career statistics show a record of 24 wins and 43 losses, a 5.25 ERA, 31 saves, and 468 strikeouts compiled over 282 games. Since shifting to a full-time role in the bullpen in 2022, he has maintained a record of 12-12, posting a 3.74 ERA with 30 saves and 171 strikeouts across 183 innings pitched.
In related news, the Nationals have also designated right-handed pitcher Amos Willingham for assignment on the same day.
