FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Lionel Messi is set to embark on another preseason tour with Inter Miami, consisting of five matches across four different countries as the team prepares for the upcoming 2025 season.
The club recently announced three matches scheduled in South America and Central America. Inter Miami will kick off this tour against Peruvian champions Club Universitario de Deportes in Lima on January 29.
Following the Peru match, the team will head to Panama City to face Sporting San Miguelito on February 2, and then travel to San Pedro Sula in Honduras to compete against Club Deportivo Olimpia on February 8.
Earlier, it was revealed that the first and last matches of the preseason would include a game against Mexican powerhouse Club America in Las Vegas on January 18, while they will conclude their exhibition campaign against MLS opponent Orlando City in Tampa, Florida on February 14.
“We’re thrilled to announce these five matches against both domestic and international teams across the Americas to prepare for what we expect to be a remarkable 2025 season,” said Raul Sanllehi, Inter Miami’s president of football operations. “These games will put us in a strong position for a highly competitive year with multiple tournaments underway, including the FIFA Club World Cup, CONCACAF Champions Cup, Leagues Cup, and MLS.”
This season, Inter Miami’s schedule is packed with up to 34 regular-season MLS games, the five preseason matches, and participation in three cup tournaments, which could easily bring the total to over 50 matches — and likely even more. Additionally, international matches for Messi and potentially other players on the team will further add to this total.
However, this year’s preseason tour may not be as extensive as the ambitious one planned the previous year, which included matches in locations like Dallas, El Salvador, Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong, and Japan. Many aspects of that trip did not unfold as intended; for instance, the anticipated match between Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in Saudi Arabia never took place due to Ronaldo’s injury. Furthermore, fans in Asia expressed disappointment when Messi missed one match and played limited minutes in another, leading to some refunds being issued to disgruntled ticketholders who had invested over $600 with the expectation of seeing Messi play.
Inter Miami is set to commence its training camp this Saturday with physical examinations, followed by the first practice under new head coach Javier Mascherano on Monday.
