A man was taken into custody on Wednesday after attempting to enter the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center with a machete and several knives, according to law enforcement officials.
Capitol police indicated that their officers discovered the machete in the individual’s bag during an X-ray screening. Additionally, they found three knives hidden within the same bag.
The identity of the arrested individual has not been disclosed yet, but he faces charges related to the possession of a dangerous weapon, according to police reports.
In the wake of this incident, security screening on the north side of the visitor center was briefly paused, but this area has since resumed normal operations.
This arrest occurred while members of the community were visiting the Capitol to pay tribute to former President Jimmy Carter, who has been lying in state for the second consecutive day within the Capitol Rotunda.
Furthermore, President-elect Donald Trump is anticipated to arrive at the Capitol later in the day, marking his first visit to the building since his departure from office in 2021. He plans to honor Carter before proceeding to meet with Senate Republicans.
