Ta’Niya Latson of Florida State named AP Women’s Basketball Player of the Week

The national player of the week in women’s basketball for the ninth week of the season has been announced, with Florida State’s Ta’Niya Latson receiving the honor. The junior guard made headlines by tying the program record with an impressive 40-point performance against Virginia Tech, marking her as the first player in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) to achieve a 40-point game this season. Remarkably, she is among only eight players in the past 23 years to record at least 40 points along with five assists and five steals in a single contest.

Georgia Amoore from Kentucky earned the runner-up spot, demonstrating her exceptional skills by averaging 25.5 points and nine assists in victories over Mississippi State and Vanderbilt. She notably achieved a scoring feat by surpassing 20 points for the sixth consecutive game, including a stellar performance where she made seven 3-pointers against the Bulldogs. This marks the second time this season that she has achieved such a high tally of three-pointers in a game. Currently, she ranks second in the nation for assists, with an impressive average of 7.4.

In addition to the top players, several athletes received honorable mentions for their performances, including Jordyn Jenkins from UTSA, Faith Masonius of Seton Hall, and JuJu Watkins from Southern California.

Looking ahead, Fordham forward Irene Murua deserves attention after leading her team to significant victories against Richmond and Duquesne. In a thrilling showdown against Duquesne, she scored the game-winning shot just as the clock expired, contributing 12 points and gathering 11 rebounds. This came right after she achieved a personal best of 24 points in a narrow win over Richmond.
