APIA, Samoa — The Samoa men’s rugby team has announced the resignation of coach Mahonri Schwalger amid serious legal issues. The board of the Samoa Rugby Union, led by Chairman Tuilaepa Dr. Sailele Malielegaoi, confirmed that Schwalger’s resignation was officially accepted earlier this week.

Schwalger was placed on suspension last month following the filing of multiple criminal charges against him. These include unlawful sexual connection, attempted sexual violation, sexual conduct with a minor under 16, indecent assault, and common assault. He is currently out on bail and scheduled to appear in court on April 28 to address these charges.

In a statement shared on social media, Chairman Malielegaoi mentioned, “This resignation follows a period of suspension granted to (Schwalger) after the criminal charges were brought against him in court.” He also acknowledged the significant achievements the team experienced under Schwalger’s guidance during the past year, including impressive performances that kicked off with a victory over Italy, a Tier 1 Nation, and a commendable showing in the Pacific Nations Cup.

Looking forward, Lakapi Samoa is set to begin the search for a new head coach, as they remain dedicated to fostering the development and success of Manu Samoa at the highest levels of international rugby.

Schwalger’s tenure as coach began in April, following the departure of Seilala Mapusua, who had led the team into the 2023 World Cup held in France. At 46, Schwalger has a notable background as a former Samoa captain with 40 test caps playing in the hooker position. His playing career also included stints with teams like Sale and Scarlets in the UK, as well as the Hurricanes, Highlanders, and Chiefs in New Zealand’s Super Rugby league.
