Atlanta Dream Coaching Changes

The Atlanta Dream announced the hiring of LaToya Sanders and Brandi Poole as assistant coaches on Monday, alongside the promotion of Brooklyn Cartwright to the position of assistant general manager.

New head coach Karl Smesko expressed enthusiasm about the new additions to his coaching staff: “LaToya and Brandi bring invaluable WNBA experience, including deep postseason success, to our staff. Their leadership, knowledge, and passion for the game will be instrumental as we continue to build a winning culture in Atlanta. We are fortunate to have them join the Dream.”

LaToya Sanders comes to the Dream after a significant tenure with the Washington Mystics, where she spent three years, culminating in her role as associate head coach. Prior to transitioning into coaching, Sanders had a distinguished playing career in the WNBA, highlighted by her contribution to the Mystics’ championship-winning season in 2019.

“I’m excited to join the Atlanta Dream and work with such a talented team and staff,” stated Sanders regarding her new position. “This is a tremendous opportunity to contribute to the continued growth and success of the organization.”

Brandi Poole brings over 20 years of experience in basketball leadership, having held various coaching positions at both the WNBA and collegiate levels. Her most notable achievement includes a five-year stint with the Connecticut Sun, where she played a key role in leading the team to a remarkable 105-53 record and two appearances in the WNBA Finals.

“Karl Smesko is a highly respected coach, and I look forward to learning from and working alongside him,” commented Poole. “His basketball acumen and character are second to none. I am grateful to both him and Dan Padover for believing in my abilities to contribute positively to the future of the Atlanta Dream and help compete for a WNBA Championship.”

Brooklyn Cartwright, who has been with the Dream since 2021 as the director of basketball operations, is stepping into her new role as assistant general manager. Throughout her time, she has played a crucial role in basketball operations while closely collaborating with the coaching staff, front office, and GM Dan Padover, aiding in the team’s strategic vision moving forward.

“I am thrilled to take on this new role with the Atlanta Dream and deeply grateful to our ownership, General Manager Dan Padover, and the entire organization for their unwavering support and belief in me,” expressed Cartwright. “This promotion is a testament to the incredible culture we’ve built—a culture that champions hard work, collaboration, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. I’m excited to continue contributing to the Dream’s growth both on and off the court.”
