SEATTLE — Aerin Frankel showcased her skills by only conceding one goal during a shootout, assisting the Boston Fleet in a thrilling 3-2 comeback win against the Montreal Victoire at Climate Pledge Arena on Sunday. The event was part of the ongoing Takeover Tour for the Professional Women’s Hockey League, attracting an enthusiastic crowd of 12,608 fans.
Initially, Montreal took control of the game, leading 2-0 by the end of the first period. Laura Stacey opened the scoring with a power-play goal just 6:28 into the match, followed by Abby Boreen’s goal about 10 minutes later. Both players notched their third goals of the season. Jennifer Gardiner and Cayla Barnes provided assists for Stacey’s goal, while Boreen received help from Erin Ambrose and Kristin O’Neill on her tally.
The turning point for Boston came in the second period when Hannah Bilka scored on a power play at 12:45, narrowing the gap to 2-1 with assists credited to Megan Keller and Amanda Pelkey. Then, adding to the drama, Susanna Tapani netted the equalizer at 10:58 in the third period, facilitating the comeback; Keller and Bilka assisted Tapani, marking Keller’s sixth assist this season and Bilka’s fourth.
Montreal goalie Ann-Renée Desbiens made an impressive 28 saves, but ultimately, the team saw its four-game winning streak come to an end. Frankel, playing for Boston, recorded 23 saves and helped her team snap a three-game losing skid. Desbiens made crucial saves late in the regulation, including a remarkable deflection during a 2-on-1 situation for Boston and another critical stop with just 1.2 seconds remaining, forcing the match into overtime.
Last season, the two teams faced off four times, with three of those contests ending in overtime, including one that extended into triple overtime. Earlier this season, Montreal had triumphed over the Fleet with a score of 3-1.
Next, the Boston Fleet will head to Minnesota for their match on Wednesday, while the Montreal Victoire will journey to Toronto for their upcoming game on the same day.
