DALLAS — Thomas Harley scored the winning goal on a rebound just 3:01 into overtime, leading the Dallas Stars to a thrilling 3-2 victory over the Utah Hockey Club on Saturday night.
Jamie Benn and Oskar Bäck also contributed goals for the Stars, who are on a four-game winning streak for the first time since their season opener when they won their first four games. Matt Duchene and Wyatt Johnston each tallied two assists, while goaltender Jake Oettinger made impressive 33 saves during the match.
For Utah, Matias Maccelli found the net twice, and goaltender Karel Vejmelka stopped 26 shots; however, the team suffered its sixth loss in seven outings, bringing their record to 1-4-2 over that stretch.
In the overtime period, Harley scored his 21st career goal, marking his fourth overtime goal in 155 games, when he elevated the puck into the goal after Vejmelka had made a stop on a shot from Matt Duchene.
The scoring started with Benn putting the Stars ahead just 16 seconds into the second period. Maccelli equalized for Utah at 1-1 less than a minute and a half later. Bäck then regained the lead for Dallas with about nine and a half minutes left in the second, but Maccelli quickly leveled the score again with his second goal of the game just over three minutes later. This marked Maccelli’s first two-goal game of the season and his fifth overall, ending a goal drought that lasted 23 games since his last goal on November 7. Bäck also broke his scoring slump, netting his first goal since November 14, after 22 scoreless games.
Takeaways from the match include the fact that Utah managed to stay competitive with only 11 shots in the third period. In contrast, the Stars have excelled against Utah and its former incarnation, the Arizona Coyotes, boasting a 23-2-1 record over the last 26 meetings.
A pivotal moment of the game was Oettinger’s spectacular glove save on Lawson Crouse early in overtime, preventing Utah from taking the lead.
In terms of penalties, Dallas successfully killed off the only penalty of the game, maintaining their position as the league’s best at home for penalty kills, having given up just one power-play goal in 26 attempts over their last 12 games.
Looking ahead, the Stars will travel to New York to face the Rangers on Tuesday as they kick off a challenging five-game road trip. Meanwhile, Utah is set to host the Florida team on Wednesday, marking the beginning of a season-high seven-game homestand.
