In a thrilling college basketball matchup on Saturday night in Beaumont, Texas, Alexis Marmolejos led Lamar University to a narrow 63-61 victory against Houston Christian. Marmolejos stood out with an impressive performance, scoring 21 points and playing a crucial role in the game’s final moments.
With just 1 minute and 11 seconds remaining on the clock, Marmolejos completed a three-point play that tied the game at 61. Following this vital play, Errol White made a key defensive steal, giving Lamar an opportunity to pull ahead. Although Adam Hamilton missed a jumper shortly thereafter, teammate Ja’Sean Jackson seized the offensive rebound and scored a critical basket with around two seconds left, effectively putting Lamar ahead.
Hamilton’s defensive prowess came to the forefront once more as he secured a steal just before the final buzzer, solidifying Lamar’s victory. Alongside Marmolejos, Andrew Holifield contributed by adding 11 points, albeit with a shooting performance of 5 for 12, lacking success from beyond the arc where he went 0 for 4. Hamilton also played a notable role, contributing eight points with a field goal percentage of 36.4 percent after shooting 4 of 11.
On the opposing side, Bryson Dawkins was a standout for the Huskies, finishing the game with 20 points and collecting eight rebounds. His teammate, Julian Mackey, matched his scoring effort, also finishing with 20 points. Demari Williams provided additional support with eight points and six rebounds, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Lamar’s determined efforts.
This victory improves Lamar’s record to 8-6 overall and keeps them undefeated in Southland Conference play at 3-0, while Houston Christian drops to 4-10 with a conference record of 1-2.
