COLUMBUS, Ohio — Dmitri Voronkov netted two goals as the Columbus Blue Jackets triumphed over the St. Louis Blues with a score of 6-4 on Saturday night.
Other scorers for the Blue Jackets included Kirill Marchenko, Adam Fantilli, Mathieu Olivier, and Mikael Pyyhtia, helping Columbus secure a solid record of 5-2-1 over their past eight matches. Prominent contributors included Ivan Provorov and Sean Monahan, both of whom provided three assists, while Zach Werenski tallied two. Goaltender Elvis Merzlikins made 29 saves during the game.
From the Blues, Brayden Schenn, Jordan Kyrou, and Cam Fowler each recorded a goal along with an assist, with Colton Parayko also adding to the scoreboard. Dylan Holloway was credited with two assists, and Joel Hofer made an impressive 33 saves, though St. Louis faced their second loss in six games.
The matchup featured a chaotic third period with a total of eight goals scored, including five in a mere 3:40. Voronkov’s goal at 7:24 of the period pushed the Blue Jackets ahead 5-2.
Following this, Parayko and Schenn scored within 3:22 of each other, narrowing the gap to just one goal for St. Louis. However, Olivier secured the victory for Columbus with an empty-net goal with just over a minute left on the clock.
In terms of performance, the Blues, coming off a dominant 4-0 victory against Ottawa the previous day, struggled to find their rhythm, finishing the first period with a 1-0 deficit and being outshot 16-7. Their record stands at 1-3-1 in back-to-back game situations.
On the other hand, the Blue Jackets have seen greater success thanks to a productive line comprised of Voronkov, Marchenko, and Monahan, who boasts 29 points (eight goals and 21 assists) over his last 25 appearances.
A notable highlight of the game was Pyyhtia scoring his first ever shorthanded goal and just his fourth goal in total across 49 NHL games, which extended the Blue Jackets’ lead to 3-0 in the early third period. The Blues managed to respond just 70 seconds later by scoring during their own power play, making the score 3-1.
Another key statistic from the night is Werenski’s remarkable 15-game point streak at home, marking the longest for a defenseman in the past three decades, during which he accrued 30 points (nine goals and 21 assists).
Looking ahead, the Blues will head to Minnesota for their next game on Tuesday, while the Blue Jackets are set to face the Pittsburgh Penguins.
