Russell scores 25 as VCU defeats Loyola Chicago 84-65

CHICAGO — In a commanding performance, Phillip Russell contributed significantly to VCU’s 84-65 win over Loyola Chicago on Saturday, scoring 25 points.
Russell’s impressive game included six rebounds, enhancing his team’s numbers as the Rams improved their record to 11-4 with a 1-1 standing in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
Alongside Russell, Christian Fermin also made a notable impact with 14 points, shooting an efficient 6 of 8 from the field, while Jack Clark added 12 points, completing 6 of 9 attempts but struggled from beyond the arc, missing all three of his three-point shots.

On the opposing side, the Ramblers, now sitting at 9-5 and 0-1 in their conference, saw their leading scorer, Des Watson, finish the game with 20 points.
He was supported by teammate Jayden Dawson, who contributed 10 points to the effort.
Jalen DeLoach was also a factor, recording eight points along with eight rebounds.

The game saw Russell net 12 points during the first half, which ended with VCU trailing slightly at 40-37.
However, the Rams dominated the second half, outscoring Loyola Chicago by an impressive 22 points.
Russell again led his team’s scoring in the latter half, adding 13 points to seal the victory.

Looking ahead, both teams are set to return to the court on Wednesday. VCU will host Fordham, while Loyola Chicago will head out to face La Salle.
