Ian Jackson delivered an impressive performance, scoring a personal best of 27 points, while Elliot Cadeau played a crucial role in securing North Carolina’s narrow 74-73 victory over Notre Dame on Saturday.
Cadeau executed a driving layup with just 22 seconds on the clock, pulling the Tar Heels (9-6, 2-1 ACC) closer at 71-70. Following that, Matt Allocco of Notre Dame was fouled and successfully converted two free throws with 14 seconds left. Moments later, Allocco fouled Cadeau while he attempted a three-pointer, leading to a decisive free throw that ultimately secured the victory.
Despite a timeout called by North Carolina, Burton had an opportunity to tie the game but, after driving to the basket and encountering minimal contact, he was unable to finish the layup.
Jackson’s scoring prowess has remained consistent, as he has tallied at least 20 points in four consecutive games. Cadeau complemented his efforts by contributing 10 points and providing six assists, making him the only other player from UNC in double digits.
RJ Davis also had a notable game, scoring eight points and surpassing former teammate Armando Bacot to claim the second spot on North Carolina’s all-time scoring list, trailing only Tyler Hansbrough. He currently ranks ninth in ACC history with a total of 2,353 points.
For Notre Dame (7-7, 1-2), Burton, who had been sidelined due to a knee injury sustained during a game against Rutgers on November 26, came off the bench to lead his team with 23 points in just 23 minutes. Tae Davis contributed 17 points, while Braeden Shrewsberry added 16 to the scoreboard.
Jackson particularly shone in the first half, scoring 10 of North Carolina’s 18 points during a 5 ½-minute span that transformed an early 9-8 deficit into a commanding 26-14 lead with 8.5 minutes left in the period. The Tar Heels maintained a 39-32 advantage as they headed into the halftime break.
This win further solidifies North Carolina’s dominance over Notre Dame, having claimed victory in 13 of the last 15 meetings between the two teams.
Looking ahead, North Carolina is set to face SMU on Tuesday, while Notre Dame will take on N.C. State on Wednesday.
