BOWLING GREEN, Ohio — In a thrilling matchup on Friday night, Akron secured a narrow 71-68 win against Bowling Green, thanks in large part to Sharron Young’s impressive performance off the bench, where she contributed 17 points.
Young demonstrated her shooting prowess, converting 6 of 10 attempts, which included 3 successful three-pointers out of 6 attempts, propelling the Zips to an 8-5 record and marking their first victory in the Mid-American Conference at 1-0.
Alongside Young, Shammah Scott added to the scoreboard with 11 points, making 4 of his 11 attempts, two of which were from beyond the arc. Isaiah Gray also made an impact, finishing with 10 points on 4 of 8 shooting, including a pair of made three-pointers.
On the other side, Trey Thomas led the Falcons with 19 points and three steals, showcasing his defensive skills as well. Derrick Butler supported the Falcons with 15 points and contributed two blocks, while Marcus Johnson finished the game with 14 points and rounded out his performance with six rebounds.
The first half saw Tavari Johnson score seven points, with Akron trailing 32-30 at halftime. Young stepped up during the second half, scoring 14 points and helping the Zips outscore Bowling Green by a margin of five points, securing the hard-fought victory.
Both teams are set to return to action on Tuesday, with Akron preparing to host Central Michigan and Bowling Green making the trip to face Western Michigan.
