MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — U.S. Olympic sprinter Fred Kerley has been detained in South Florida following an altercation with law enforcement, as reported by local authorities.
Footage captured from body cameras worn by Miami Beach police shows Kerley engaged in a heated discussion with multiple officers late on Thursday night, which escalated into a physical struggle. During this confrontation, officers brought him to the ground, where one of them struck him multiple times before deploying a Taser on the 29-year-old athlete, as stated by police sources.
As outlined in the arrest documentation, officers were responding to an active police situation when Kerley approached the scene, attempting to reach his vehicle parked nearby. Officers instructed him to navigate around the area, but Kerley chose to dispute their directions, resulting in a shoving conflict with the police.
In the course of attempting to detain him, four officers struggled to effect the arrest while Kerley attempted to elude capture, according to official accounts. After being subdued with the Taser, he was transported to a nearby hospital before being taken to the Miami-Dade County jail.
Kerley faces several charges, including battery, resisting arrest without violence, and disorderly conduct. At this time, online court records do not indicate that Kerley has secured legal representation, and USA Track & Field, the governing body for the sport in the country, has refrained from commenting on the incident.
Kerley is renowned for his accomplishments in athletics, having secured a silver medal in the 100 meters at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and a bronze in the same event at the 2024 Olympics set to take place in Paris. Additionally, he has earned a total of six medals at the World Athletics Championships during his illustrious career.
