MANCHESTER, England — Manchester United has decided to activate a one-year extension for Harry Maguire’s contract, ensuring that the defender will remain at Old Trafford until the conclusion of the 2025-26 season, as confirmed by manager Ruben Amorim on Friday.
Maguire’s contract was initially set to expire at the end of this current season. During a press conference, Amorim addressed the team’s plans, stating, “I spoke with him this morning and emphasized the need for him to elevate his performance on the field. We rely heavily on him right now.”
Additionally, Amorim pointed out the necessity for Maguire to enhance his leadership skills. He acknowledged the difficulties Maguire has faced at the club but reiterated that his contributions are crucial at this juncture. “Therefore, we are pleased to activate the option to extend his contract,” he added.
The 31-year-old defender transferred to United from Leicester City in 2019 and previously held the captaincy before it was passed to Bruno Fernandes.
“When assessing our squad, it becomes clear that we are in need of leaders on the pitch,” stated Amorim. “Maguire possesses the potential to be a leader; he must work on that aspect and further develop his game, so we are glad to secure his presence moving forward.”
Amorim also mentioned that winger Amad Diallo is on the verge of signing a contract extension, highlighting ongoing efforts to strengthen the team.
Currently, Manchester United finds itself in 14th place in the Premier League, ahead of a critical matchup against their historic rival, Liverpool, who are occupying the top spot in the league, scheduled for Sunday.
