BOSTON — On Monday, Boston College guard Donald Hand Jr. made a significant mark in the world of college basketball by being recognized as the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) men’s basketball player of the week. This achievement is historic as he joins his father, Donald Hand Sr., who earned the same accolade while playing for Virginia in 2000.
This remarkable milestone makes them the first father-son combination to receive ACC player of the week honors since the program’s inception in 1972. Donald Hand Jr. delivered an outstanding performance over the weekend, scoring a personal best of 29 points alongside 10 rebounds during a victory against Fairleigh Dickinson. In a tightly contested matchup, he made eight of BC’s final ten points, contributing significantly to the team’s 78-70 win.
Currently, Hand Jr. leads Boston College in scoring with an average of 15.3 points per game, while also ranking eighth in the ACC for rebounds, with 7.5 per game. Meanwhile, his father, Hand Sr., achieved the ACC’s weekly player honor on January 31, 2000, paving the way for his son’s current success.
This father-son duo’s accomplishment not only highlights their individual talents but also adds to the rich history of college basketball within the ACC, particularly reflecting the legacy families can create in sports.
