LONDON — Gareth Southgate, the former manager of the England national soccer team, has been awarded a knighthood as part of the New Year Honors list.

Southgate’s tenure saw the team reach two consecutive European Championship finals and achieve a spot in the semifinals of the 2018 World Cup, making him the most successful coach in the role since Alf Ramsey.

At 54 years old, Southgate stepped down from his position shortly after England lost to Spain in the Euro 2024 final held in July.

He joins the ranks of three other former England managers who have been knighted: Alf Ramsey, Walter Winterbottom, and Bobby Robson.

Additionally, Gerald Davies, the former wing for Wales and the British and Irish Lions, earned a knighthood as well; he has previously served as president of the Welsh Rugby Union.

In the realm of athletics, nine-time Paralympic champion Hannah Cockcroft received a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), while Olympic 800-meter gold medalist Keely Hodgkinson was honored as a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).

Stars of Britain’s upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic teams, including heptathlon silver medalist Katarina Johnson-Thompson and three-time medalist Dina Asher-Smith, were also recognized with MBEs.

Former Liverpool legend Alan Hansen received an MBE, and David Moyes, in his latest role as manager of West Ham, was awarded the Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE).

Dawn Astle, who established the Jeff Astle Foundation to advocate for increased research into head injuries in soccer in honor of her father, who suffered from dementia and passed away in 2002, was also honored with an MBE.

The honors, which have been traditionally bestowed by monarchs as part of various orders of chivalry since the Middle Ages, are now reviewed by a government committee before being forwarded to the prime minister and King Charles III.
