CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — Jacob Hutson played a pivotal role in leading Northern Iowa to a 78-67 victory over Southern Illinois on Sunday, contributing 20 points to the team’s success.

Hutson was impressive, making 7 out of 10 attempts from the field and converting 5 of 7 free throws for the Panthers, who now hold an 8-5 record and a perfect 2-0 in the Missouri Valley Conference. Tytan Anderson supported the offense with 15 points, hitting 6 of 7 shots and making all 3 of his free throw attempts. Additionally, he recorded a double-double with 10 rebounds. Max Weisbrod also contributed significantly, scoring 10 points with 4 of 7 shooting, including 2 out of 5 from beyond the arc.

On the other side, the Salukis saw Jarrett Hensley lead their efforts with a strong performance of 20 points and six rebounds. Ali Abdou Dibba and Drew Steffe contributed 10 and 8 points, respectively, but it wasn’t enough to secure a win for Southern Illinois, who now stands at 5-8 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

Northern Iowa managed to seize control late in the first half, taking the lead with just over a minute left before halftime. Hutson’s sharp shooting helped the Panthers establish a 38-34 advantage as they headed into the locker room. In the second half, Northern Iowa stretched their lead from 13 points to a staggering 27-point lead, fueled by a 14-0 scoring burst that put them ahead 73-46 with 8:38 remaining. Hutson was instrumental in the second half as well, adding another 10 points to his tally.

Both teams are scheduled to continue their season on Wednesday, with Northern Iowa set to host Belmont, while Southern Illinois will face Evansville at home.
