He attended the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, from 1943 until his graduation in 1946 (class of 1947). He also studied at Union College in Schenectady, New York, from 1952 to 1953.
— PRESIDENCY: At the age of 52 years, 3 months, and 20 days, he was inaugurated as the 39th president of the United States on January 20, 1977, after winning the 1976 election against then-President Gerald R. Ford. He completed his term and left office on January 20, 1981, after being defeated by Ronald Reagan in the 1980 election.
— POST-PRESIDENTIAL CAREER: Founded The Carter Center in 1982 to promote peace and health initiatives. He became a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity in 1984. In 2002, he was honored with the Nobel Peace Prize. He spent 37 years teaching at Emory University, achieving tenure in 2019 at age 94.
