ANAHEIM, Calif. — The Anaheim Ducks made a thrilling comeback, overcoming a two-goal deficit in the second period to secure a 5-3 victory against the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday, highlighted by Ryan Strome’s goal with just 2:36 left in the game.

Strome’s sixth goal of the season was initially not counted on the ice but was later confirmed after a review showed that his shot completely crossed the goal line before Edmonton goaltender Calvin Pickard could intervene with his skate.

Mason McTavish capped off the scoring with an empty-net goal, marking the Ducks’ first win over the Oilers by more than one goal since March 30, 2019. In addition to Strome, Cutter Gauthier, McTavish, and Robby Fabbri each contributed with a goal and an assist, while Drew Helleson also found the back of the net, helping Anaheim break a seven-game losing streak against Edmonton.

In goal, Lukas Dostal was solid, stopping 20 shots to bolster the Ducks’ performance. For the Oilers, Leon Draisaitl shone bright with two goals, and Connor McDavid added two assists as they sought to extend their strong play, having gone 3-0-1 in their last four outings. Evan Bouchard also scored for Edmonton, while Pickard faced 32 shots, making 27 saves in the effort.

In notable takeaways, Draisaitl has achieved a significant milestone, becoming the fourth player to record at least 120 regular-season points in a calendar year, ending the year with 50 goals and 71 assists across 2024. The 1993 season was the last time so many NHL players reached that level of scoring in a single calendar year.

For the Ducks, they possessed a slight advantage with 32 shots on goal and have now won four of their last seven contests.

A key moment in the match came when Fabbri tied the game at 3-3 with just 2:27 left on a quick snapshot from the right faceoff circle, assisted by McTavish. Fabbri has been impressive since returning from a knee injury, accumulating seven points in eight games (three goals and four assists).

Furthermore, McDavid continues to be a formidable opponent for the Ducks, maintaining a remarkable 14-game point streak against them, with 11 goals and 23 assists during this stretch. Only against Nashville and New Jersey does he have a longer current streak at 15 games.

Looking ahead, both teams will return to their home ice for their next matchups on Tuesday, with the Oilers set to face Utah and the Ducks preparing to host New Jersey.
