SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Hannah Hidalgo delivered an impressive performance, scoring 28 points while Sonia Citron contributed 25, leading No. 3 Notre Dame to a decisive 95-54 victory over Virginia on Sunday.
Olivia Miles showcased her remarkable skills by achieving her third triple-double of the season and the sixth in her career, finishing with 11 points, 10 rebounds, and an impressive 14 assists. Miles came into the matchup as the NCAA’s active leader in career assists, averaging 6.8 assists per game.
This victory marked a significant milestone for Notre Dame’s coach Niele Ivey, celebrating her 100th career win. Ivey has an impressive record of 100-34 over her five seasons with the team.
With this win, Notre Dame improved its record to 11-2, 2-0 in the ACC, while maintaining an impressive shooting accuracy of 51% from the field. The Fighting Irish dominated the boards, out-rebounding Virginia 54-31, while the Cavaliers struggled offensively, hitting only 30% of their shots and continuing to search for their first win in South Bend.
Some key insights from the game include Citron, who missed the previous game against Loyola Maryland due to soreness, also recording 11 rebounds and making five shots from beyond the arc.
Virginia faced substantial challenges in attempting to break through Notre Dame’s defense. The Cavaliers endured a daunting 28-0 run by the Fighting Irish during the first half, going 0-for-12 from the field and committing four turnovers throughout the scoring drought.
A pivotal moment in the game came when Citron drained a 3-pointer during a fast break with 2:49 left in the first quarter. Her hot hand sparked a scoring run as she netted seven of the first 12 points during that stretch.
Another troubling stat for Virginia was a prolonged offensive slump, as they missed 15 consecutive field goals in the first half and went without a basket for 11 minutes and 44 seconds.
Looking ahead, Notre Dame is set to continue its ACC campaign with a trip to North Carolina next Sunday, while Virginia will prepare to host Wake Forest on Thursday.
