LAS CRUCES, N.M. — In a dominant performance, New Mexico State secured an impressive 85-52 win over the University of the Southwest, an NAIA team, on Saturday evening.
Christian Cook contributed significantly to the victory, scoring 11 points with a shooting accuracy of 50%, including two successful three-point attempts out of five. Alongside him, Jaden Harris also scored 11 points while maintaining a perfect shooting record of 4 for 4, which featured three shots from long range connecting flawlessly. Zawdie Jackson supported the offensive effort with 10 points, hitting two of his four attempts from beyond the arc.
For the opposing team, the Mustangs, Joshua Sasser led the scoring effort with nine points, complemented by two steals. Anthony Scott added eight points and also secured two steals, while Jalen Mcafee Marion contributed seven points to the scoreboard for the University of the Southwest.
New Mexico State established control right from the start, taking the lead just 18 seconds into the first half and steadily building their advantage without ever relinquishing it. By halftime, they were ahead 44-20, with Cook playing a key role by contributing nine points in the first half alone.
The Aggies continued to dominate in the second half, extending their lead dramatically with a 12-0 run that pushed the margin from 22 points to an astonishing 34 points. Despite some spirited efforts from the Mustangs, New Mexico State outscored them by nine points in the final period of play, largely thanks to Harris, who led his team with eight points during that half.
This game reflects not just the individual talents of players like Cook, Harris, and Jackson, but also underscored the cohesive and strategic gameplay of the Aggies as they improved their season record to 7-6.
