COLLEGE PARK, Md. — In an impressive matchup on Saturday, Julian Reese shone with a double-double, contributing 23 points and grabbing 11 rebounds, while Derik Queen also posted a double-double as Maryland triumphed over Maryland Eastern Shore with a score of 81-66.

With this victory, Maryland wrapped up its nonconference schedule with an impressive 11-2 record, having seen their ranking peak at No. 7 in the NCAA NET standings. The Terrapins showcased their dominance at home, extending their remarkable streak to 23 consecutive wins in nonconference games played at their arena.

The Hawks made a spirited effort to regroup after halftime, sinking seven consecutive shots to narrow a 16-point deficit down to just eight points. Christopher Flippin’s free throws brought UMES to within 54-48 with ten minutes remaining in the game. However, Maryland responded with a strong offensive push, hitting eight out of ten attempts to create a 72-54 lead with just five minutes left on the clock.

Derik Queen was instrumental during this surge, executing a dunk, jumper, and a layup alongside a pair of free throws. Not long after, he added two more free throws to the score. Selton Miguel then bolstered the team’s advantage, completing a three-point play to elevate the lead to 81-58 with 2:26 left in the game.

In addition to Reese’s significant performance, Queen finished with 18 points and 14 rebounds, while Miguel added 10 points. Ja’Kobi Gillespie contributed nine points and dished out nine assists, showcasing an overall strong team effort.

For UMES, Ketron Shaw led the scoring with 20 points, while Evan Johnson added 15 and Flippin chipped in 14 points, which was part of a valiant effort in the game as the Hawks fell to a 4-12 record.

Towards the end of the first half, Maryland was in control with a 27-21 lead, eventually concluding the half with a 7-0 run and a subsequent 6-0 spurt to stretch their lead to 40-24. The Terrapins finished the half effectively, making five of their final seven shots, while UMES struggled, missing six of their last seven attempts. In the first half alone, Reese recorded high numbers with 13 points and seven rebounds.

Looking ahead, Maryland, having split a pair of conference games in December, is set to return to Big Ten action, facing off against Washington and Oregon on January 2 and January 5, respectively.
